Back in the good old days of first year when I was a wee fresher our regular evening activity was taking the ball for a walk round the field after hall. Balls need their exercise you know. So Richard, Chris, Andy and I, often joined by anyone else who fancied, would spend the evening entertaining the ball (and ourselves) with a lap round the field and often a game of football midway round. We used to play in the cricket nets. Chris would cross the ball in and Richard or Andy would fire the ball towards the nets. We weren't allowed to go in until Richard had a decent header, which often took quite a while. But we never gave up, even playing well into the night if necessary. Just as we were looking forward to a 24 hour football marathon as my first mayweek approached we were banned from playing in the cricket nets. How rubbish.
Andy came back to visit churchill at the beginning of June. Richard came up too, from 'just north of London' and we went to hall, just like the good old days. And, for nostalgia's sake, Richard brought the old football. Battered and flat it had seen better days, but even old footballs need walking. So round the field we went after hall. Just like nothing had changed. Andy, Richard, Jon, Ed and I. We didn't play in the cricket nets though, just incase.
Richard and Ed kept us amused, attempting to play 'cricket' with the old flat ball, a small stick and Ed's flip flops balanced up as wickets. When the stick proved to be a useless bat, Richard improvised using his leg. The leg-cricket proved quite successful! Richard even got his header in before it got dark and we retired to the bar for some well earned drinks and chocolate.
Best comments: do you think a two-and-a-half year rule still stands?!
footballs really shouldn't do that when you kick them...
